Community: a group of people with diverse characteristics who are linked by social ties, physical proximity, or a common interest.
The members of a community typically come together to share perspectives, and participate in joint events. Many of these ties can be religion, profession, location, activities, family, food, ethnicity, and even hobbies and interests. Whether tight-knit or loosely defined, participating in building community instills a sense of belonging and security.
The artwork of photographer Lydia A. Harris and painter Susan J. Bailey celebrates community through investigating neighborhoods, artifacts, architecture, people, and events. Lydia and Susan both live in the historic community of Rock’s Village, in Haverhill. The people of that village join together several times a year to work on cleaning and beautifying the village, to plan for future improvements, and to socialize at potluck dinners.
