Description of Event:
An array of custom costumes, props, set pieces, and various items crafted for the stage! Design and construction by various artists for Acting Out, a performance art company in Lawrence directed by Linda Schoonmaker.
The Acting Out!Theater Company began operating in 2002 in a church basement and has worked hard to create a home at 56 Island Street in Lawrence, where it opened a studio seven years ago. In that time, Acting Out! has established a one hundred seat theater that fills up quickly for performances.
Initially, the focus was providing children with the opportunity to gain experience and exposure on stage. Acting Out! writes their own scripts and music to provide budding actors with an opportunity to be seen and heard. In addition to staging their original productions, Acting Out! also brings well known shows to the stage. Participants perform on stage and learn about all aspects of this art form; including set and costume design, and the technical terms of theater.
This exhibit at Essex Art Center provides an opportunity to share with a greater audience an up close look at the artistry that creates the magic of theater. Behind the scenes artists design and construct sets with all types of media, handcraft items used as props, and resourcefully build costumes for as many as one hundred actors per performance. Photographers capture the essence of those moments when actors are immersed in their craft.
